Changes to National Insurance, income tax, and duties on fuel, alcohol, tobacco and vapes are expected.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt holding his red box outside 10 Downing Street, signally the arrival of a new budget Jeremy Hunt is set to announce the spring budget this afternoon. This will be the last budget before the next election, and the chancellor’s fourth since he took office in October 2022. It’s also likely to be the last spring statement with the Conservative Party in government – if current polls predicting a Labour landslide are to be believed.

Companies producing or importing cigarettes are charged a tobacco tax, which is often passed to consumers in addition to VAT. This pushed the price of a box of cigarettes up by £1.08 after the autumn statement announced a higher tobacco duty. It’s likely to rise even further in a bid to discourage use of tobacco products. The government is expected to introduce a new tax on vapes, which currently are taxed with VAT but not their own special duty.
