I am a named driver on my 79-year-old wife’s comprehensive Tesco Bank car insurance. The premium rose at renewal from £508 to £1,127, though my wife managed to negotiate it down to £908.
I asked Tesco Bank to look at your case again and explain why it was charging you extra for a whole person’s worth less cover. It came back to say this calculation was normal for its business in such circumstances. A spokesman says: ‘Insurance premiums are assessed on a range of risk factors, one of which is whether a couple is insured on the same policy. Where this is the case, we apply a discount to the premium.
When I caught up with you last week, you told me you were now recovering well from surgery on your right eye and still were having issues with the other eye. You said your wife decided to stick with Tesco’s policy — but added your 55-year-old son as a second driver. This also led to a discount — but just £16, which means the total premium was £892.
I received a reply in early February which was dated a month earlier, containing another form and requesting I send it with the URN. I spent 45 minutes on the phone explaining the situation again — but was continually asked for the reference number that I never received.
