Floods News

Nebraska,South Dakota,General News

Many Midwestern homeowners hit by bad flooding this week do not have flood insurance. Data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency shows that the government has issued only about 26,500 policies across Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. Because bad floods are rare, many don't realize they are at risk and need insurance.

Rick Satterwhite, 62, eyes rising water from the Missouri River as it creeps closer to the house where he grandchildren live in South Sioux City, Neb., on Monday, June 24, 2024. Satterwhite says he’s planning to get flood insurance for his own house also located by the river in nearby Dakota City, Nebraska, after floodwaters came within feet of his home this week. Heavy rains in recent days have submerged farmland near Vermillion, S.D., on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

And this past week’s storms also badly flooded smaller rivers that don’t frequently overflow, catching people off guard. “I don’t believe that insurance is the answer to life’s problems,” he said. “I would say we made a very well informed decision, but in this case, we got burned.”
