Many Midwestern homeowners hit by bad flooding this week do not have flood insurance.

Rick Satterwhite, 62, eyes rising water from the Missouri River as it creeps closer to the house where he grandchildren live in South Sioux City, Neb., on Monday, June 24, 2024. Satterwhite says he's planning to get flood insurance for his own house also located by the river in nearby Dakota City, Nebraska, after floodwaters came within feet of his home this week.

And this past week’s storms also badly flooded smaller rivers that don’t frequently overflow, catching people off guard. “I don’t believe that insurance is the answer to life’s problems,” he said. “I would say we made a very well informed decision, but in this case, we got burned.” There is some help available for the uninsured. The federal government's disaster declaration for parts of the flooded area allows it to issue grants and low interest loans to help with temporary housing, some home repairs and essentials like cleaning supplies and baby formula.

Few have flood insurance to help recover from devastating Midwest stormsMany Midwestern homeowners hit by bad flooding this week do not have flood insurance. Data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency shows that the government has issued only about 26,500 policies across Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. Because bad floods are rare, many don't realize they are at risk and need insurance.
